Liyu Lake is located at the foot of Liyu Mountain, in Shoufeng Township's Chinan Village. It is only 18 kilometers from Hualien City, and is one of the older scenic areas. Liyu Lake is about 1.6 kilometers in length, and 930 meters in width, making it the largest inland lake in Hualien County. The original inhabitants called it "Dapo", while the Ami called it "Banao". It was later named Liyu Lake (Carp Lake) after Liyu Mountain, located by its east banks.
In addition to the farm and orchard, there is an ecological bird park, parrot park, and animal park in the zone. Visitors can meet cute animals, such as the Muntiacus reevesi, Formosan sika deer, Formesan Sambar, camel, llama, Formosan macaque, rabbit, sheep, pony and more there. They are all children’s favorites. In the insect and butterfly ecological zone, visitors can walk under the shades with butterflies flying around, enjoying the wonder of nature.
With 90 years of history, Hualien Sugar Factory sells its special smooth ice cream to visitors. People can also visit its museum, where historical documents, small machines and documentaries, tacit cultural products and oral history are displayed for the visitors’ information. In addition, the ruins of its architecture and huge machineries are also exhibited. From the exhibitions in the Hualien Sugar Factory Museum, visitors can learn something about the lifestyles of the people and the history of sugar production in the area in the past.
Located in Guanfu Township, Hualien County, the Forest Park aims to achieve three goals “low carbon, low development, and low business-like”. Following these principles, a park with ecological and humanistic scenes and natural landscape is designed with green facilities for the purpose of environmental protection. Integrating with the agriculture, culture, and communities in the neighborhood, it plans to achieve sustainable development and create a quality agricultural and ecological forest environment.
During the Qing Dynasty reign of Jiaqing Emperor, Taitung Prefecture was transformed into a settlement encompassing townships and towns south of contemporary Fenglin. During the Japanese occupation period, Fenglin Prefecture was formed along with Fenglin Street. In 1945, after Taiwan’s Recovery, the street was abolished and a town was established. In 1947, Guangfu Township was created to clearly define the administration area. Most of the population in Fenglin Town consists of Hakka people, making it a classic Hakka settlement.
Due to their diligence, frugalness and emphasis on education, many outstanding talents have been cultivated. In addition, there are over 80 principals and teachers in the county (according to Country Government statistics), ranking top in the nation. Most of them are from Fenglin Town. The area has a mild climate and focuses on agricultural development.
Due to unbalanced economic development in eastern and western Taiwan, excessive population outflow took place over the last two decades. Currently there are only about 14,000 people residing in the region. Primary crops include rice, corn, peanuts and watermelons in the summer. Fenglin is an area rich in culture and heritage, besides the Hakka Cultural Museum, there is also the renowned “Principal Dream Factory”, a popular destination among tourists.
Qingxiu Yuan (Japanese Temple) is the third-rank historic relics in Hualien. It was built in Japanese occupation period and is the only well-preserved Japanese temple. During Japanese ruling period, this temple was formed to stabilize and comfort Japanese’s homesickness. Apart from religion, this temple was also a medical center, classrooms, and funeral ceremony and had other functions.
The Japanese temple was built with woods and kept Japanese traditional style and spiritual. It’s a quiet place that full of Zen.
Lintienshan Forestry Cultural Area locates in Hualien Fenglin township (south of Wanli Stream, north of Ma Tai An Stream, east of Nantou county and the measure of area is 13.9 hectare). This place was discovered during Japanese occupation period and people found a hot spring in Wanli Stream and started to operate hotel business. In 1939, people started to develop pulp industry and then this place become the former of Lintienshan forest bureau in Hualien area. Nowadays, Lintienshan Forestry Cultural Area is a recreation place combines forest culture for visitors to remember past time of lumbering.
Li Chuan Aquafarm locates in Hualien Shoufeng township. The aquafarm has natural water source and spring which is good for breeding clams, Golden Trout, Sweetfish, and eels and other fishery. Recently, Li Chuan Aquafarm dedicates to develop clam extract, clam products. Visitors can also experience fishing village culture, learn more knowledge of fishery, taste the clam cuisine.
